Floyd County property owners could see a slight decrease in the county government property tax rate for 2026, while millage rates supporting fire protection and solid waste services are proposed to increase.
The Floyd County Board of Commissioners announced its intent to adopt a county government millage rate of 9.45 mills, the calculated rollback rate for 2026. The proposed rate is down from the 9.50 mills adopted for 2025 and is scheduled for consideration during a specially called meeting on Aug. 18.
A mill equals $1 in property tax for every $1,000 of a property’s assessed value. A rollback rate is calculated to offset changes in the value of existing property within the county’s tax digest.
County officials said Floyd County’s tax digest grew less than expected this year. Preliminary data indicates that approximately 75 percent of properties experienced a decrease in assessed value.
Because the proposed county government millage rate is lower than the rate used when preparing the 2026 budget, officials said the county will have to reduce spending to make up for the anticipated loss in revenue. County staff are currently reviewing departmental budgets and expenditures to identify areas where cuts can be made while maintaining essential public services.
In addition to the county government millage rate, commissioners will consider adjustments to the tax rates that fund fire protection and solid waste services.
The proposed fire services millage rate is 1.875 mills, an increase from 1.65 mills in 2025. According to county officials, the additional revenue would help fund future firefighter salary increases as well as the construction and operation of a new fire station.
The proposed solid waste millage rate is 0.657 mills, the calculated rollback rate for that service. While it is slightly higher than the 2025 rate of 0.656 mills, officials noted the increase amounts to just 0.001 mill.
The Floyd County Board of Commissioners is expected to consider adopting all three proposed millage rates during its Aug. 18 special called meeting.
