A Chattooga County Jail inmate is facing new criminal charges after authorities say he resisted deputies during a disturbance inside the detention facility and later assaulted a correctional officer. According to the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, 37-year-old Christopher Martin Roberson was charged in connection with an incident that occurred July 23 at the county jail.
Investigators said deputies responded after Roberson allegedly damaged a jail-issued tablet with a glass screen and began damaging a window inside his cell. When officers attempted to intervene, they reported that Roberson ignored multiple commands to step down from a table in the cell block.
Authorities said deputies used a Taser after Roberson allegedly resisted their attempts to take him into custody. The device was reported to be effective, allowing officers to place him into a restraint chair without further incident.
Following the restraint, a detention officer told investigators that Roberson spit on him, with saliva striking the officer’s right hand. The officer requested that criminal charges be pursued.
As a result of the incident, Roberson was charged with misdemeanor obstruction of law enforcement officers and simple battery against a law enforcement or detention officer.
