The Floyd County Commission approved the 2026 millage rate this week meeting that also included significant budget revisions and adjustments to employee health insurance premiums.
Commissioners set the county’s maintenance and operations millage rate at 9.45 mills for the coming year. The solid waste millage will increase slightly to 0.657 mills, while the fire services millage will rise to 1.875 mills, a change county officials attributed to salary needs and the addition of a new fire station. The Floyd County Schools millage rate was set at 16.75 mills.
The combined rates reflect another increase in property taxes for county residents.
County Manager Jamie McCord outlined substantial cuts made across multiple departments as part of the effort to balance the 2026 budget. A total of 46 positions have been frozen for the remainder of the year, affecting agencies including elections, the county manager’s office, parks and recreation, public safety, the county prison, 911, PAWS, the police department, and the sheriff’s office.
In addition to the freezes, the county eliminated the Ag Center Director position.
McCord noted that despite the reductions, the county “still has to make some cuts” to fully stabilize the budget.
The board also adopted new employee health insurance premiums for 2026. Monthly costs will rise by:
- $216 for family coverage
- $139 for employee and child
- $152 for employee and spouse
- $84 for employee only
Officials said the increases reflect higher healthcare costs and are necessary to maintain current coverage levels.
Commissioners acknowledged that the cuts will affect both services and staffing across county operations. Additional budget discussions are expected in upcoming meetings as departments adjust to the revised spending plan.
