Residents on Rome’s west side can expect a new place to gather later this year as plans move ahead for the construction of Garrard Park at the former General Electric property. The Rome City Commission recently approved an agreement with the Northwest Georgia Housing Authority that clears the way for the project, and officials say the park’s design phase has now been completed.
The new park will include several family-friendly amenities, including an aviation-inspired playground that reflects the history of the site, a children’s pedal course, and a covered pavilion equipped with picnic tables and restroom facilities. The park will also connect with Rome’s existing trail network, creating additional recreational opportunities for residents and visitors.
City leaders said the project has been designed with an emphasis on safety and accessibility to ensure it can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities.
Construction is expected to get underway in the near future, with city officials aiming to have the park ready for public use by Halloween.
The project carries an estimated cost of $1.73 million. Most of the funding is being provided through a grant from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, while the City of Rome is supplying the required local matching funds and managing the construction process.
