Parents and caregivers will have an opportunity to ensure their children’s car seats are properly installed during a free car seat safety event hosted by the Floyd County Police Department later this month.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, July 10, at West Rome Baptist Church, located at 914 Shorter Ave. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be on site to provide free inspections of child safety seats, assist with proper installation and answer questions about keeping children safe while traveling.
In addition to checking that car seats are correctly secured in vehicles, technicians will educate families on proper harness placement, correct seat positioning and ensuring each child is riding in a seat that fits their age, height and weight.
Police encourage attendees to bring their vehicle, their child’s car seat and, if possible, the child who regularly uses the seat. Having children present allows technicians to make sure harnesses are adjusted correctly and that the seat provides the safest possible fit.
The Floyd County Police Department has hosted similar car seat safety events in the past as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce preventable injuries and educate families about child passenger safety. Officials say improperly installed or incorrectly used car seats remain a common issue, even among experienced parents and caregivers, making routine inspections an important safety resource for the community.
The free event is designed to give families access to trained professionals who can identify potential problems, demonstrate proper installation techniques and provide peace of mind before traveling.
There is no cost to participate, and appointments are not required during the two-hour event.
The Floyd County Police Department encourages all parents, grandparents and caregivers who transport young children to take advantage of the opportunity to have their car seats inspected and to learn more about best practices for child passenger safety.
