The Calhoun City Council has officially adopted its Fiscal Year 2027 budget following the completion of the required public notice and hearing process.
Council members unanimously approved both the city budget and the Calhoun City Schools budget during Monday night’s regular meeting. The new fiscal year begins July 1 and continues through June 30, 2027.
The spending plan includes approximately $24.5 million in General Fund expenditures and nearly $89.6 million in utility-related spending. City officials said the finalized budget will be available for public review both at City Hall and on the city’s website.
Council members also approved the city’s annual fee schedules, including utility rates and general government service fees, which are likewise available for public inspection.
In a separate action, Mayor Jimmy Palmer administered the oath of office to John Robbins, who will serve on the Calhoun City Schools Board of Education. Robbins was appointed to complete the remainder of the term previously held by Dr. Stephen King, who vacated the position after moving outside the city limits.
Palmer welcomed Robbins to the board and noted his family’s longstanding history of public service. Robbins’ grandfather, John D. Shelton Jr., previously served as chairman of the school board and later as mayor pro tem for the city.
The council also addressed several other items during the meeting.
Members approved a beer and wine package sales license for La Bodega Calhoun Inc., located on W.C. Bryant Parkway.
Three annual parade requests also received council approval. The Northwest Georgia Regional Fair Parade is scheduled for Sept. 12, followed by the Calhoun High School Homecoming Parade on Oct. 1 and the Christmas Parade on Dec. 10. Each event will follow the traditional downtown route, with rain dates established for the homecoming and Christmas parades.
To improve pedestrian safety during the Downtown Farmers Market, council members approved an amendment requested by the Downtown Development Authority that expands road closures on Saturdays. The change will allow Piedmont Street between Trammell and Line streets to be closed from 7 a.m. until 1 p.m. during market hours.
In infrastructure-related business, the council awarded a contract valued at $290,271 to Consolidated Pipe and Supply for work associated with the State Route 156 Salacoa Creek Bridge project. The recommendation was submitted by the city’s Engineering Department.
The Calhoun City Council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for July 13 at 7 p.m. at The Depot on South King Street. Meetings are open to the public.
