A Silver Creek teenager is facing additional charges after authorities say he discharged a handgun while on the grounds of Armuchee High School Tuesday, causing a major disruption and multiple 911 calls. According to Floyd County Jail records, 17-year-old Scott Ryan Ferguson was allegedly loitering in the school’s north parking lot when he fired the weapon into his own leg in front of another student. The handgun was later abandoned on school property.
Ferguson was charged with possession of a pistol by a person under 18, carrying a weapon in a school safety zone, and reckless conduct. He now also faces charges of criminal trespass, loitering on school grounds, disruption of a public school, and an additional count of reckless conduct.

When reached out for a comment, Brooke Brumbelow, Public Relations for FCS said, “It seems you’ve already received our statement, which includes the factual info we have. We have no further comments.” Note: Floyd County Schools never sent CVN any statement before asking for comment. When asked for any prior statement, Brumbelow did not respond.
A parent sent CVN the following message they received from FCS, “Parents and Guardians of the Armuchee Community, We are writing to provide you with accurate details regarding an isolated incident that occurred yesterday afternoon in the band parking lot during dismissal. An adult male, who is not affiliated with AHS or FCS, entered campus to meet a student. While on site and in a vehicle, the individual was handling a firearm in his possession and accidentally discharged it, injuring himself. No AHS students or staff were harmed, nor were they ever in danger. We want to stress that this was an isolated incident, and this was not a threat towards the campus or our students/faculty. The Floyd County Police Department and the FCS K9 Unit responded immediately. The individual was taken into custody, and the weapon was secured by law enforcement. While school administration is conducting a thorough follow-up, we want to reassure you that this was an isolated event involving a non-student. Our priority remains the safety of our campus, and we thank local law enforcement for their rapid response.” This message was sent out on Wednesday morning after CVN released the story.
Ferguson is charged with reckless conduct, carrying a weapon in a school zone and possession of a gun by a person under the age of 18 years-old.
