The Community Foundation for Greater Rome, in partnership with McRae, Smith, Peek (MSP), is pleased to announce the inaugural recipients of the MSP 125th Anniversary Scholarship Fund:

The Michael D. McRae Scholarship was awarded to Fred Johnson of Rome High School.

The Virginia Barrow Harman Scholarship was awarded to Eva Poyner of Model High School.

Each student will receive a $2,000 one-time scholarship, awarded directly to their academic institution. Poyner plans to attend the University of Georgia, and Johnson will attend Berry College. Both students intend to pursue degrees in Political Science, with an interest in future careers in the legal field.

The MSP 125th Anniversary Scholarship Fund was established to celebrate the firm’s 125 years of service while investing in the next generation of leaders who aspire to careers in law and public service.

“This scholarship reflects our firm’s long-standing commitment to the communities we serve,” said Andy Garner of McRae, Smith, Peek. “We are proud to support students like Eva and Fred, who demonstrate both academic excellence and a clear desire to use their future careers to make a meaningful difference.”

Fred Johnson, a leader at Rome High School, has served as President of Mock Trial, Class President, Spokesperson for the Superintendent’s Advisory Council, and FCA Huddle Leader. He shared, “I plan to use my degree in political science as a means of achieving success, not only for myself, but for others and to help bring about positive change.”

Eva Poyner, an honor student and multi-sport varsity athlete, served as basketball team captain and earned College Board National Recognition for Outstanding Achievement. Through her work-based learning experience, she has already been exposed to the legal field. “Through my work-based learning experience I have seen the meaningful impact attorneys can have in helping people navigate difficult situations,” Poyner said. “Seeing the satisfaction that comes from using the law to assist others and pursue justice has reinforced my motivation to one day become an attorney.”

The scholarship selection process included applicants from five high schools in Floyd and Polk counties. The reviewers noted the strength and promise of the entire applicant pool.

“We were encouraged by the caliber of students who applied,” said Jennifer Scott. “This marks an exciting step for the Community Foundation as we expand into offering scholarship funds. Our hope is that this effort not only supports these outstanding students, but also inspires others to establish similar opportunities for local graduates in the years ahead.”

Applications for the MSP 125th Anniversary Scholarship are expected to reopen in spring 2027.
