A 30-year-old Summerville man, Jacob Gosnell, was taken into custody this week after authorities say a domestic dispute escalated into a violent encounter and resistance during arrest.
Officers with the Summerville Police Department responded around 5:30 p.m. on March 16 to a Circle K on the city’s north side, where a woman requested to speak with police about an incident that had taken place earlier at her home.
According to the police report, the woman said she had been preparing dinner when an argument began with Gosnell, whom she described as intoxicated. The disagreement quickly turned physical, with the woman alleging Gosnell pushed her and attempted to take her phone.
During the altercation, she was able to contact Gosnell’s mother, who could reportedly be heard telling him to leave her alone.
Authorities say the situation escalated further when the woman tried to leave the residence with her child. She told officers Gosnell followed her outside, grabbed her by the shirt collar, and dragged her back toward the home, preventing her from leaving and causing her to fear for her safety and the child’s well-being.
The woman reported no visible injuries and declined medical treatment. She later went to a neighbor’s home and contacted family members for assistance.
Due to concerns about a possible firearm inside the residence, additional officers were called to the scene. Police then responded to a home on Peppermint Place, where they made contact with Gosnell.
According to authorities, Gosnell appeared highly intoxicated and unsteady on his feet but admitted the incident occurred as described. He was then taken into custody.
During the arrest, Gosnell allegedly resisted officers, including kicking a deputy and attempting to exit a patrol vehicle before being secured.
He was transported to the Chattooga County Jail and faces multiple charges, including simple battery and simple assault under the Family Violence Act, cruelty to children in the third degree, false imprisonment, disorderly conduct, multiple counts of obstruction of law enforcement, obstruction with violence, battery on a law enforcement officer, and escape.
