A Summerville man was arrested this week after police say he shot his neighbor’s dog on New Year’s Day. According to Summerville Police, 34-year-old Cody Allen Lane went onto his neighbor’s property on Roosevelt Street after accusing the dog of killing his chickens. Police say Lane told the dog’s owner he planned to kill the dog, then grabbed the animal by the collar, dragged it into a wooded area, and shot it.

The dog’s owner, Kalya Gilreath, showed police home security video that appears to show a man pulling a brown dog away from the carport. A gunshot can later be heard in the video.

Police later spoke with Lane at his home. He told officers there had been ongoing problems with the dog killing his chickens and said he saw the dog kill two chickens earlier that day. Lane admitted to shooting the dog and told officers, “I’m a man of my word.”

Lane was arrested and taken to the Chattooga County Jail, where he was charged with cruelty to animals.
