Shorter University has announced a nationwide search for its next president, marking a leadership transition following the tenure of President Don Dowless. The University is inviting applications and nominations for a Christ-centered, visionary leader to guide the institution forward.

Founded in 1873 and located in Rome, Georgia, Shorter University seeks to “Transform Lives through Christ” through a distinctly Christian education grounded in a biblical worldview. University leaders have emphasized that the presidential search is an opportunity to reaffirm and strengthen that mission.

Dowless’s presidency coincided with a period of significant institutional challenge and change. During his tenure, the University faced public scrutiny and internal controversy related to leadership decisions and campus governance, drawing attention from alumni, supporters, and the broader Baptist community.

The Presidential Search Committee said the next president will be expected to lead with spiritual maturity, transparency, and a collaborative approach, while clearly articulating and championing Shorter’s Christ-centered mission. The successful candidate will play a key role in strengthening relationships across campus constituencies and restoring confidence among students, faculty, alumni, donors, and denominational partners.

According to the committee, candidates must demonstrate a personal love for Jesus Christ and strong alignment with the University’s faith commitments. Applicants are expected to hold a terminal degree, such as a Ph.D. or Ed.D., and have a minimum of 10 years of experience in higher education administration. Leadership experience within Christian or Baptist-affiliated institutions is strongly preferred.

The University is seeking a president who is an active member of a Southern Baptist church, with at least 10 years preferred, and who is recognized within the Baptist denomination. Candidates must affirm the Baptist Faith and Message (2000), as well as Shorter University’s faith and lifestyle statement.

Additional qualifications include the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of constituencies, demonstrated success in fundraising and stewardship of institutional resources, and knowledge of higher education accreditation processes. The Search Committee also emphasized the importance of servant leadership and a demonstrated record of spiritual and professional growth.

Applications and nominations are now being accepted. Interested candidates should have a colleague or friend submit a complete résumé along with a letter of recommendation. All materials must be received by March 18, 2026, to be considered by the Presidential Search Committee.

Application materials should be submitted electronically to [email protected]
