Floyd County fire crews were called to a house fire late Monday at 1591 Old Rockmart Road that left one person dead and several others injured.
A response team made up of two engine companies, a ladder truck, a rescue unit, and two chief officers, 18 firefighters in total, arrived to find heavy smoke and flames pouring from the single-story residence. Crews immediately began searching the home and were able to locate and remove a victim.
Firefighters worked quickly to contain the flames, preventing the fire from spreading further, but the structure suffered extensive damage. Investigators later determined the fire was accidental and started during cooking.
An adult man died from injuries related to the fire. Two other adults were taken to Atrium Health Floyd for treatment. Five people were displaced as a result of the incident.
The Rome-Floyd Fire Department offered condolences to the family and others impacted by the tragedy.
