Work is officially underway on Rome’s newest recreational attraction following a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday at Ridgeferry Park.
City leaders, community partners, and recreation advocates gathered to mark the start of construction on a new pump track — a looping, paved course designed for bikes, scooters, skateboards, rollerblades, and even pedestrians.
The track will feature a continuous circuit with banked turns and rolling terrain designed to create a smooth, flowing ride. Unlike traditional bike trails, pump tracks require no pedaling. Riders generate speed by using an up-and-down “pumping” motion with their bodies to maintain momentum as they navigate the course’s curves and dips.
Officials say the design makes the track accessible to a wide range of users. Children can safely learn balance and coordination, while teens and adults can build skills and endurance. The track is also suitable for senior citizens and those seeking low-impact outdoor activity. In addition to bicycles and scooters, the track can be used for skateboarding, rollerblading, and even walking.
The project represents a continued investment in outdoor recreation amenities at Ridgeferry Park and throughout the city. Funding for the pump track comes from TRED of Rome-Floyd County, SPLOST revenues, and the City of Rome.
Leaders say the new addition will not only provide a fun and active space for residents but also serve as a draw for visitors seeking unique recreational opportunities in the area.
Construction is now underway, with the pump track expected to become a new gathering place for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages once completed.
