An early morning house fire Sunday claimed the life of a 78-year-old man, according to local fire officials.

At approximately 5:04 a.m., the Cartersville Fire Department, along with Bartow County Fire and Emergency Services, responded to reports of a structure fire at a residence on Remington Drive.

When crews arrived on scene, they found the home fully engulfed in flames, with heavy fire conditions spreading rapidly throughout the structure. Firefighters immediately began aggressive suppression efforts, working quickly to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby properties.

After bringing the fire under control, crews conducted overhaul operations and began searching the residence. During that process, authorities located one occupant inside the home.

Officials later identified the victim as Dennis Priest, 78, who died from injuries sustained in the fire.

The Cartersville Fire Department’s Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze. No additional details have been released at this time.

Authorities say updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
