The Polk County Board of Commissioners worked through a full agenda Tuesday evening, highlighted by a major board appointment, employee recognition, rezoning approval, and new additions to the Planning Commission.

McElwee Appointed to District 1 Seat
David McElwee was appointed to the District 1 Board of Commissioners seat. The board voted to appoint McElwee in order to ensure the seat remained filled for the remainder of the term, allowing District 1 to continue to have full representation on county matters. McElwee will serve until the next election cycle, when voters will choose a permanent officeholder.

Tax Assessor’s Employee Named Employee of the Month
Vicki Johnson of the Polk County Tax Assessor’s Office was honored as Employee of the Month. Commissioners praised Johnson for her professionalism, attention to detail, and exceptional service to county residents.

Rezoning Approved Near Highway 278 and Sardis Road
Commissioners voted to rezone a 1.79-acre parcel adjacent to Highway 278 and Sardis Road from A-1 (Agricultural) to C-1 (Commercial).
The change allows the property to be used for retail or service-oriented commercial development rather than agricultural activity. Rezoning to C-1 typically opens the door for businesses such as small shops, offices, convenience services, or other low-intensity commercial uses, depending on county regulations.

Planning Commission Appointments
The board also appointed three new members to the Polk County Planning Commission: Nick Rainey, Jody Bentley Smith, and Zac Arnold. The trio will help guide development policy, zoning recommendations, and long-range planning initiatives throughout the county.

The board adjourned after affirming that the new appointments and land-use decisions were aimed at supporting continued growth and efficient county operations.
