The Floyd County Board of Education on Monday night approved a series of major technology and facilities expenditures, beginning with the purchase of 1,850 Acer Chromebooks as part of the district’s ongoing replacement cycle. The purchase, totaling $572,131, is expected to generate significant long-term savings.
District officials explained that 8,700 Chromebooks must be replaced by June 30, 2030. If the district postpones the next portion of the replacement cycle, the eventual cost of those devices is projected to reach approximately $2.7 million. By acting now, the district estimates a potential savings of $150,000 to $200,000, citing increasing hardware prices and limited future availability.
In addition to technology upgrades, the board approved a major facilities investment: the system will put the installation of turf combo baseball/softball fields at all four county high schools—Coosa, Armuchee, Pepperell, and Model out to bid. The new fields will allow for softball programs to use the baseball facilities, which include lighting for night games. The total project cost will not exceed $6.8 million. According to the proposal, the upgrades may also include new dugouts and improvements to the back facades at each field.
District leaders said both actions reflect long-term planning to ensure Floyd County schools keep pace with instructional and athletic facility needs while managing rising costs.
