Rome resident Karl Gyden has announced his candidacy for the Rome City Schools Board of Education, bringing with him a passion for community engagement, literacy, and student success.
Gyden, a parent with two children currently enrolled in the Rome City School District, said his decision to run stems from a deep commitment to ensuring every child has the tools and support needed to thrive academically. His primary focus, he said, is on building stronger community partnerships to help students learn to read more effectively, both inside and outside the classroom.
“Reading is the foundation of everything we do in education,” Gyden said. “When a child learns to read well, every subject becomes more accessible. I believe our community has a big role to play in that process, from parents to local businesses to volunteers.”
Gyden emphasized the need to think outside the box when it comes to improving student performance. He believes innovative approaches, such as mentorship programs, expanded after-school reading initiatives, and creative uses of technology, can make a meaningful difference in helping students reach their potential.
In addition to his focus on literacy and academic achievement, Gyden said he wants to take a closer look at the school system’s budget to ensure taxpayer dollars are being used effectively. He believes more funding should be directed toward students and classroom teachers, the people most directly responsible for student growth and success.
As a parent, community member, and advocate for educational excellence, Gyden said his goal is to work collaboratively with families, educators, and district leaders to make Rome City Schools stronger for every student.
