An illegal combat sports event near Weiss Lake was shut down late last month, and its organizers could now face serious prison time and massive fines, according to Alabama officials.

The event, called “The Pit,” took place on September 27 and was stopped during a joint operation by the Alabama Athletic Commission (AAC) and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

AAC Chief Inspector Shane Sears, who led the task force, said the commission acted after receiving a tip about the unlicensed event, which had been promoted on social media.

“I can’t stress enough how dangerous these events are,” Sears said. “Anyone who knows of illegal activity is encouraged to contact our office.”

Using a drone and monitoring live social media feeds, deputies confirmed that fights were underway before moving in to shut the operation down. Officials said minors were also present at the scene.

Signs marked the dirt road leading to the secluded site, where attendees reportedly paid for admission while private security in “Pit Staff” shirts controlled the crowd.

Authorities identified Samuel Weaver and Javin Newsome as the promoters behind the event. Neither had the licenses or permits required by the Alabama Athletic Commission, which oversees all combat sports in the state — including boxing, wrestling, mixed martial arts, and other unarmed competitions.

State law allows fines of up to $10,000 per violation of AAC regulations. Evidence from the scene — including photographs, a fight card, and video recordings — has been turned over to Assistant Attorney General Matt Bledsoe.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing and could expand to include additional charges such as illegal gambling, racketeering, kidnapping, and child endangerment.

If convicted, those involved could face decades in prison and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.

The operation involved Sheriff Jeff Shaver, Chief Deputy Josh Summerford, Sgt. Thomas Key, and District Attorney Summer Summerford. Authorities said the crowd dispersed quickly once the shutdown was announced, and no injuries were reported.
