In a sweeping move that will dramatically reshape high school athletics across the state, the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) has announced a major change to how teams will qualify for the state playoffs—beginning with the 2026–2027 school year.

For decades, Georgia teams earned postseason berths by finishing among the top four in their region standings.

That long-standing format will now be discarded in favor of a new ranking-based system.Under the new structure, only region champions will automatically qualify for the state playoffs.

The remaining 24 teams in each classification’s playoff bracket will be determined by a GHSA postseason ranking formula, which is expected to consider factors such as strength of schedule, overall record, and margin of victory.

This change will impact football, softball, and volleyball starting in the fall season and will later extend to basketball, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, and tennis.

In addition to the new playoff qualification format, the GHSA announced that it will eliminate the Division I/Division II split in Class A, reverting to the traditional seven-classification system used in previous years.

The move marks one of the most significant structural changes in GHSA history—one that could reshape competitive balance across the state.
