As the ongoing federal government shutdown stretches into another week, families across Floyd County are beginning to feel the impact , especially those who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). With SNAP benefits temporarily paused due to the shutdown, local food banks and community organizations are stepping up to help fill the gap.
Local leaders say they’ve already seen an increase in requests for food and emergency assistance. “People are anxious,” said a volunteer with Action Ministries Rome. “We’ve had several families come in this week who normally depend on SNAP just to get through the month.”
To help those affected, several Floyd County organizations are offering free meals and groceries to anyone in need:
- Action Ministries Rome – 713 E 1st Ave, Rome, GA | (706) 291-7336
- Community Kitchen at Rome First United Methodist Church – 202 E 3rd Ave, Rome, GA | Open Mon–Fri, 8:30–11:30 AM
- Salvation Army Food Pantry – 317 E 1st Ave, Rome, GA | (706) 291-4745
- Northwest GA Hunger Ministries – 1110 N Broad St, Rome, GA | (706) 291-0556
- Journey Food Pantry – 15 Redmond Court NW
Residents are encouraged to contact these organizations directly for information on food distributions, meal schedules, and eligibility requirements.
Local officials are urging the community to look out for one another during this difficult time. “Floyd County has always pulled together in moments like this,” said a spokesperson from the local Department of Family and Children Services. “If you’re able to donate or volunteer, now is the time.”
As the shutdown continues, updates on SNAP disbursements and local assistance programs will be posted on the Floyd County government and DFCS websites.
