A powerful symbol of patriotism and remembrance lines Highway 411 between Centre and Leesburg, Alabama. Known as the Avenue of Flags, this moving tribute features 503 flags and crosses, each honoring a veteran from Cherokee County who served their country with courage and sacrifice.
The project is maintained by The Spirit of Cherokee, a local non-profit organization founded in October 1994 and incorporated in March 1995. The group operates as a 501(c)(3), dedicated to promoting civic, patriotic, cultural, and charitable causes across Cherokee County.
The Avenue of Flags is proudly displayed on several national holidays throughout the year — weather permitting — including:
- President’s Day
- Memorial Day
- Flag Day
- Independence Day (July 4th)
- Labor Day
- September 11th (flags only)
- Thanksgiving Day
Each flag represents a life, a story, and a legacy — and serves as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by local service members. The display has become a cherished tradition for the community and a source of pride for Cherokee County.
“It’s a meaningful way to honor those who’ve served, and it brings people together in a shared spirit of gratitude and remembrance,” said the Avenue of Flags Committee, which includes Johnny Roberts, Joy Perry, and Thereasa Hulgan.
Maintaining this large-scale display takes dedication, volunteers, and ongoing financial support. Community members who wish to contribute can send donations to help preserve this tradition for future generations.

As the flags continue to wave each year, they do more than decorate the roadside — they tell the story of Cherokee County’s enduring respect for its heroes.
