A Cedartown woman is facing several serious charges following a domestic incident that escalated over the course of several 911 calls Saturday evening. Makayla Nichole Wilkins, 24, of Cedartown, was arrested this week and charged with battery, simple battery, obstruction of law enforcement, and three counts of first-degree cruelty to children.
According to a report from the Cedartown Police Department, officers were initially dispatched to a residence at 812 Jones Street in reference to a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, officers determined the situation was a verbal dispute between Wilkins and another individual. After speaking with both parties, officers cleared the scene.
Roughly 30 minutes later, Wilkins called 911 again, stating that she was attempting to leave the home but was being prevented from taking her child. Officers returned to the scene and found Wilkins outside the residence, described in the report as “very irate.”
Police attempted to separate the parties to further investigate the situation. During interviews with witnesses inside the home, officers were informed that a physical altercation had taken place, during which Wilkins allegedly attempted to pull the child from another individual by one arm. Witnesses stated they intervened to prevent further escalation.
Despite multiple warnings from officers to remain quiet while statements were being taken, Wilkins repeatedly interrupted the investigation and refused to comply with officers’ instructions. She was subsequently arrested for obstruction and placed in a patrol car, where she reportedly began kicking the interior of the vehicle. Officers then transported her to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Following her removal from the scene, police continued collecting statements. Witnesses alleged that after the initial argument, the situation escalated again outside the home. Wilkins, reportedly holding her 6-month-old child, allegedly threw the infant into a vehicle where another individual was sitting, causing the child to hit his head on the center console.
As the altercation continued, Wilkins allegedly punched the other party in the mouth and later threw a small infant swing, striking the person in the legs while they were holding the child.
Wilkins remains in custody at the Polk County Jail. The condition of the child was not disclosed, and authorities have not released further details regarding any medical evaluation.
The investigation is ongoing.
