The community of Cave Spring came together in celebration on Saturday as nearly 100 supporters gathered at the new Historical Society Pavilion in Cave Spring Square to mark the official approval of the Northwest Georgia Charter School.

The event was filled with hope and excitement as parents, educators, and community leaders cheered the long-awaited launch of the school, which will begin serving students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The school plans to add one grade level each year until it serves students through 12th grade.

The school will be tuition-free and open to all students residing in Floyd County, Rome City, and Polk County. As a public charter school, it will be funded by the state and governed independently, providing families with a no-cost alternative to traditional public school options.

The celebration featured remarks from Judy Taylor, founder of the Northwest Georgia Charter School, and Dawn Williams, who will serve as both superintendent and principal. Both women were instrumental in organizing and leading the years-long effort to bring a charter school to the region.

“This school is about giving families more options, more opportunity, and a school that’s rooted right here in this community,” said Taylor during her remarks. “Today is not just a win for us—it’s a win for Cave Spring and for the future of our children.” Taylor went on to say, “Some people said Cave Spring will never have a school again; this week we proved them wrong.”

Williams echoed those sentiments, adding, “We’re building a school that will grow with our students. We’re focused on high standards, small class sizes, and a deep commitment to the community.”

The creation of the Northwest Georgia Charter School is especially meaningful in light of the 2022 closure of the original Cave Spring School by Floyd County Schools. That closure left a void in the small community, one that residents have worked tirelessly to fill.

Saturday’s celebration was both festive and heartfelt, featuring refreshments, children’s activities, and a chance for attendees to speak with school leaders and volunteers. Many expressed excitement about the return of a school presence in Cave Spring, and optimism for the years ahead.

Classes at Northwest Georgia Charter School are expected to begin in fall 2026.
