Georgia Power has announced key projects in Bartow County and Floyd County as part of its recent request to the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) for certification of new energy resources aimed at meeting Georgia’s growing energy needs.

Bartow County: Plant Bowen

At Plant Bowen in Bartow County, Georgia Power is proposing:

  • Two new combined cycle natural gas units with a total capacity of 1,482 MW. These units are part of a broader statewide plan to add 3,692 MW of new natural gas capacity to help ensure reliability and support economic growth.
  • Two new Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) installations (Bowen Phases 1 & 2) totaling 500 MW. These projects will enhance grid stability by storing energy during off-peak times for use during high-demand periods.

Floyd County: Plant Hammond

In Floyd County, Georgia Power is advancing its clean energy strategy with:

  • A 192.5 MW expansion (Phase 2) of the Battery Energy Storage System at Plant Hammond, building on the 57.5 MW Phase 1 already under construction. The expanded system will further support renewable energy integration and improve system reliability during peak demand.

These Bartow and Floyd County projects are part of Georgia Power’s broader 9,900 MW proposal submitted to the Georgia PSC, which includes new natural gas generation, battery storage systems, and renewable energy projects across the state. The initiatives are designed to ensure grid reliability from 2029 through 2031 and to meet nearer-term energy demands not covered by the company’s All-Source Request for Proposals.
