Floyd County residents will soon get to vote on whether to allow liquor sales by the drink in areas outside the Rome city limits following a 4-1 vote by commissioners Tuesday night.

Commissioners approved a referendum that will allow voters to decide if restaurants and other businesses can sell distilled spirits by the drink. The resolution also includes a vote on allowing Sunday sales of alcoholic drinks — including liquor — from 11 a.m. to midnight.

The lone “no” vote came from Commissioner David Thornton.

Residents will have a chance to decide this November.

Voters in Floyd County already approved Sunday beer and wine sales back in 2022. Those sales are allowed from 11 a.m. to midnight. However, that previous vote did not include liquor, which is still not allowed by the drink in the county.
