An investigation is underway after two individuals were found dead inside a home located directly across from Chattooga High School on Highway 114, according to the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Mark Schrader reported that deputies were dispatched to the residence just before 7 p.m. on Monday evening to conduct a welfare check. Concerned neighbors had alerted 911 after noticing no activity at the property for nearly three weeks.

Upon arrival, law enforcement was assisted by Summerville Fire Chief Trey Skelton and personnel from the Summerville Fire Department, who helped gain entry into the house. Inside, deputies and emergency responders discovered the bodies of two individuals.

Initial assessments suggest that the home had remained vacant for several weeks, aligning with the neighbors’ concerns. Sheriff Schrader confirmed that the investigation is being handled jointly by the Sheriff’s Office and Chattooga County Coroner Earle Rainwater McElhaney.

The deceased have been transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsies, which are expected to provide more insight into the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Sheriff Schrader acknowledged the crucial support provided by the Summerville Fire Department and Atrium Health Floyd EMS, calling their assistance “invaluable” during the initial stages of the investigation.

At this time, the identities of the deceased and the cause of death have not been released. Authorities stated that additional details will be shared as the investigation continues.
