Polk School District is participating in the annual summer feeding program to help make sure school-aged children continue to get the nutrition they need while not attending classes.

Distribution happens each Thursday this month from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at both Youngs Grove Elementary School, 601 Wooten Road in Cedartown, and Van Wert Elementary School, 370 Atlanta Highway in Rockmart.

Parents and guardians of children 18 and younger will be able to get seven days worth of food for breakfast and lunch for free.

The program is funded through state and federal grants and has been a part of PSD summer programs in recent years as it tries to continue serving students even after classes end.

Each site works like an assembly line with families able to drive through and pick up food for the eligible school-aged children in their household. Each child is provided with seven days of breakfasts and lunches, including entrees, fruits, cereal, juice and milk.

Locations normally distribute thousands of meals each week, with the final day of distribution this year happening June 26.

Only parents or guardians are allowed to pick up food and they are checked off as they go through the line. Anyone with questions can call the PSD School Nutrition office at 770-684-5447.

They can also visit the PSD School Nutrition website at https://www.polk.k12.ga.us/page/school-nutrition to view the weekly menu, carb count and heating instructions.
