Rome Man Dies in House Fire, Identified

A fatal house fire that broke out Wednesday afternoon on Wakefield Place in Garden Lakes is still being investigated.

The Rome-Floyd Fire Department was called to the scene at 15 Wakefield Place around 4:24 p.m., according to Division Chief Jamie Stone. While firefighters were on their way, dispatchers reported that someone might still be inside the burning home.

Firefighters immediately began battling the blaze and searching for the person inside. They found a man in the home, but unfortunately, he did not survive. The victim has been identified as 49-year-old Jermaine Wright, according to Deputy Coroner Jordan Pierson. His body was taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for an autopsy.

“The house suffered extensive damage,” Stone said. “The exact cause of the fire is still unknown and is being investigated.”
