A bold new initiative is underway to bring a world-class riverboat casino and entertainment venue to downtown Rome. The project, titled “Queen of the Coosa,” envisions a three-story paddlewheel riverboat permanently docked at the convergence of the Oostanaula, Etowah and Coosa Rivers, offering an upscale restaurant, full casino floor, bar and dance hall, and an elegant event space for weddings, concerts, and community gatherings.

The initiative is currently in the exploratory phase, with the formation of a citizen-led committee aimed at gauging public support and engaging local and state officials. According to the project’s organizer, the goal is to create a vibrant economic and cultural hub that takes advantage of Rome’s most underutilized natural resource — its rivers.

“We have three rivers converging in our city, and yet we’ve done so little to activate them,” said the founder of the initiative Charles Craton. “The Queen of the Coosa would celebrate our heritage, create jobs, generate tax revenue, and offer something truly unique to Georgia and the Southeast.”

While casino gambling is not currently legal in Georgia, legislation to legalize gaming is introduced in the state assembly nearly every year. Cities such as Atlanta, Columbus, and Savannah have already expressed interest in expanding entertainment options. The Queen of the Coosa initiative positions Rome to join that conversation with a distinctive and historically rooted concept. “I just want to get Rome a seat at the table,” says Craton. “Our rivers have long been underutilized and undervalued. Let’s change that.”

The riverboat would be privately funded, with no taxpayer burden, and would include potential docking sites downtown and at other scenic locations such as the Lock and Dam. If approved and supported by the community and legislature, organizers say the boat could also help fund the restoration of the historic Lock and Dam, eventually allowing cruises all the way to Weiss Lake.
