Despite a packed chamber of Floyd County citizens citing their displeasure, the Floyd County Commission still approved a rezoning request that will allow a data center to be located near Coosa High School. The decision followed a public hearing during which residents raised concerns about water and power usage, noise, and the proximity to homes and the school.
The property was sold by the Floyd County Board of Education, with support from the Rome-Floyd County Development Authority. County officials emphasized that developers approached them due to the area’s strong water resources, and discussions have taken place about limiting future data centers.
To address local concerns, the commission placed conditions on the rezoning: the property can only be used for a data center or related uses, lighting must minimize light pollution, noise limits will apply, and buffer zones of 100 to 200 feet must be maintained.
