A new traffic camera to slow drivers down will be operational within the next two weeks.  The camera has been installed on Lavender Drive in front of West Central Elementary School.

According to a study, 44% of drivers drove at least 10 mph over the posted limit during the morning drop-off and 52% at least 10 mph over during dismissal.   The student added that during the school day 30% of drivers went at least 10 mph over the limit.

After the camera goes active, there will be a 30 day grace warning period where no fines will be issued, only warnings.

The camera will be on during school hours, starting one hour before arrival and ending one hour after dismissal. Drivers going 10 mph or more over the posted speed limit will be fined.

Speeding drivers face a $75 fine for the first offense and $125 for later violations.

The Rome Police Department will collect nearly 65% of the fines collected with the remainder going to RedSpeed.

This is the third traffic camera to be installed at a Rome City School, with the others at Main Elementary and Rome High School.
