For the first time in over a decade, Floyd County water customers might see their first rate increase.

County Manager Jamie McCord noted that while they have managed to save costs in various areas, expenses for utilities, chemicals, and treatment have surged, in some cases doubling or quadrupling. For example, the cost of chemicals for water treatment has jumped over 664% since 2013.

A recommended 15% rate increase for 2025 would add about $3.92 to the monthly bill for the average customer.

Additionally, all water systems must meet new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards by April 2029, which impose strict limits on certain chemicals. McCord expressed confidence in their current water quality but noted that testing will be conducted this year.

Floyd County’s water system operates independently of tax dollars. The full commission will discuss the proposed rate increase on February 25, with potential implementation on April 1, 2025. The county plans to re-evaluate rates for the following year.
