A new speed traffic camera will soon be recommended by the Floyd County Board of Education outside the Armuchee Elementary School on GA 140.

The motion was made this week after hearing a traffic study done on the area.

The Floyd County Police Department preformed the study from Martha Berry Highway to Barnes Drive over the last three years.  Since the study began, there have been 102 wrecks with 40 injuries and 1 fatality.

Another study done by RedSpeed near the entrance of the school showed that on average 3,000 cars pass in front of the school each day with 715 cars showing high rates of speed.

Since the installation of a speed camera in front of Armuchee Primary School on Martha Berry Highway in October 2022, studies say that there have been a decrease in wrecks by 66% and nearly half the speeding violations.

If installed, the camera would be active during the school zone times, 7 to 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 to 4 p.m. During that time, vehicles going more than 11 mph above the 35 mph speed limit will be caught by the system, and RedSpeed will issue a citation.

Before being installed, the speed camera has to be approved by the Floyd County Commission and the Georgia Department of Transportation.
