Jeremy Keith Shumate, 53, and Jeffery Lee Shumate, 53, both of Cedartown, were arrested for elder abuse this week following officers being dispatched to 400 Ridgeview Lane.

A complainant advised that there were two males fighting in the neighboring apartment. She also stated that one of the males exited the apartment and was covered in blood. She then advised 911 that there was an elderly female inside the residence and that the names of the 2 males who were fighting were Jeffrey and Jeremy Shumate.

Before officers arrived on the scene the female advised that one of the males left in a truck and she did not know where he went. Upon arrival, we made contact with the occupants of apartment B and found that Jeffrey Shumate and Joan Shumate (83-year-olds).

Due to the incident, officers said they separated the subjects on the scene and began speaking to them. While speaking with Jeffrey, Officer Duke emerged from the residence door and told Jeffrey that he was under arrest and to place his hands behind his back. He then began to pull away from officers and was restrained until he placed his hands behind his back. He was then walked to a patrol car and seated in the back seat.

Officer Duke then advised that Jeffrey had hit his mother multiple times in the face. Police said that they saw visible swelling on her left eye that had already begun to change colors. When asking the victim how many times she was struck she advised that it was at least 5 times and that it was with a closed fist.

She then explained that both of her sons(Jeffrey and Jeremy) were in a physical altercation. She stated that she then attempted to step in between them due to them destroying the apartment and breaking items. When she did this that is when Jeffrey began to hit her. Jeremy then ran from the residence and left in a vehicle.

Officers then began to look around the home to assess the damage caused by the altercation and found multiple fresh holes in the walls and several items that had been smashed including a guitar and a mirror. There was also some other colored blue glass that was on the floor but due to the extent of the damage we were unable to tell what the item was.

Jeremy was later found and arrested.

Both are charged with battery, criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and elder abuse.

Jeffery is additionally charged with obstruction.
