The Gordon County Sheriff’s Office received a report Monday regarding a telephone SCAM in which a caller impersonated a deputy sheriff. The caller used the name of an actual deputy, and demanded that the victim forward money electronically as a penalty for missing jury duty. The caller then insisted that the victim make a second payment.
The Sheriff’s Office NEVER under any circumstances solicits money from citizens. If a citizen misses jury duty, he or she would be contacted in person by a deputy in uniform.
Sheriff Ralston urges citizens to NEVER send money to unfamiliar or unknown persons, and to be aware that these scammers are skillfull in impersonating officials. Most of these telephone scams originate overseas. Sheriff Ralston urges citizens to NEVER give out personal data or financial information to unknown callers. Simply hang up.
