James Tavares Mims, 40 of Fayette, was arrested in Rome after reports said he attempted to destroy police evidence while being taken into custody for trespassing and stealing from Solid Rock Baptist Church.
Reports said that Mims had been previously banned from the church before being found this week stealing water.
Officers stated that while taking Mims into custody they noticed him drop a bag to the ground and attempt to stomp the items into the dirt.
It was then discovered that the bag contained methamphetamine.
Mims is charged with theft by talking, possession of meth, tampering with evidence, criminal trespass, giving false information to police, obstruction and being a fugitive from justice.
