Andrew Paul Hart, 24 of Rome, was arrested this week after reports said he punched a police officer in the chest with a closed fist during a traffic stop at the intersection of Wayside and Calhoun Roads.
Police said that they stopped Hart after they saw him driving on the wrong side of the roadway. During the stop they stated that a partially consumed container of alcohol was observed.
Hart then allegedly kept reaching for the doors before attempting to open the trunk of his car after being told not to do so.
Officers added that after advising Hart that he was going to be handcuffed, he physically resisted while hitting the officer in the chest.
Hart is charged with felony obstruction of police, simple battery against a police officer, open container and driving on the wrong side of the roadway.
