Diego Escutia-Cruz, 18 of Rome, was arrested this week after reports said he was part of a ground that tried to shoot and kill a police officer following a high-speed chase.

Police said that Escutia-Cruz was a passenger in a vehicle when it wrecked on Burnett Ferry Road.  However, after the crash, Escutia-Cruz jumped into the driver’s seat and fled.

Reports added that during the car chase with Escutia-Cruz he drove at speeds of over 99 mph while driving on the wrong side of the roadway, passing in no pass zones, running red lights and stop signs while placing others in danger of being hit.

The chase ended when Escutia-Cruz struck a fence on Burnett Ferry Road.   He then proceeded to jump out of the car and runaway on foot.   It was during the chase that one Escutia-Cruz’s accomplices fired a gun at a police officer who was attempting to take them into custody.

Escutia-Cruz is charged with aggravated assault, hit and run, driving on an expired license, criminal trespass, felony obstruction, theft by taking a motor vehicle, attempting to elude police, reckless driving, stop sign violation, driving on wrong side of roadway, passing in a no passing zone and speeding.
