A Bartow County Jail inmate, Alexander Smart, 35, has died while in custody, and an investigation has been launched.
In an official statement from the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office — “Alexander Smart did pass away while in custody at the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office Adult Detention Center on Thursday, April 16, 2024. No foul play is suspected. The Bartow County Sheriff’s Office is in charge of the investigation.”
Smart was arrested on June 21, 2023 after being charged with murder. He was accused of shooting and killing 47-year-old Michael Gravley near Pine Ridge Drive and McTier Circle.
