Christopher Lee Gunnells, 43 of Rome, was arrested this week after reports said he struck and killed a pedestrian walking along Woods Road.
Reports said that he told police that he reached for an item and when he did he went across all lines of travel and struck and killed 41 year-old Amanda Harris.
After being taken to Atrium Health Floyd for treatment, Gunnells made a statement about an item being being his item in the back of the patrol car. A search of the patrol car then resulted in police finding a bag of suspected methamphetamine.
Gunnells is charged with homicide by vehicle in the 1st degree, reckless driving, possession of methamphetamine, distracted hands free driving violation, failure to maintain lane, and probation violation.
