On Saturday January 27, 2024, at approximately 6:25pm, Rome Police Department officers were dispatched to an accident at the intersection of Highway 27 South and Walker Mountain Road.  Officers were informed that there was entrapment with multiple injuries.

During the investigation by the Rome Police Department Accident Investigation Team, video evidence was discovered which clearly depicts the crash scene in its entirety. This video evidence shows Vehicle 1, driven by George Fowler (with both Howells as passengers), legally entered the intersection in preparation for a left turn. As Vehicle 2, driven by William Frier, approached the intersection, the traffic signal turned red.  Vehicle 2 (driven by Frier) entered the intersection and struck Vehicle 1 as it was completing its left turn.

The investigation into this incident is continuing and further information will be released as available.

A two-vehicle accident on US 27 at Walker Mountain around 6:30 Saturday resulted in the death of Denise Howell and injuries to four others.

Reports said that a GMC Yukon driven by 37 year-old George Fowler turned left in front of a Dodge tow truck driven by a southbound 22 year-old man.

Other passengers in the Yukon included, Howell’s husband Jim and his brother Joe were also injured.

The unidentified driver of the tow truck was also injured.  

The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
