Matthew James Johnson, 41 of Rome, was arrested this week after reports said he threw methamphetamine off a bridge in an effort to prevent officers from getting it during a traffic stop on North 2nd Avenue.

Police said that they stopped Johnson after observing him failing to maintain his lane.  During the stop, Johnson fled on foot and dumped the drugs into the river.

It wasn’t until after being captured that Johnson told authorities what he had done.

Johnson is charged with tampering with evidence, failure to maintain lane, obstruction and operation of a car on approach of an emergency vehicle.
