The GBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Cartersville, Bartow County, Georgia.  The Cartersville Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Thursday, November 2, 2023. Two people were shot during the incident. One is in critical condition; the other person was treated for a non-life-threatening injury and was released from the hospital.  No officers were injured in this incident.   

Preliminary information indicates that at about 9:20 p.m., Cartersville P.D. officers responded to a home on Anne Circle, Cartersville, GA in reference to a domestic dispute. When officers got out of their patrol cars, Christopher Shane Milteer, age 24, of Cartersville, GA, began shooting at the officers while standing in the doorway of the home. The officers used their patrol cars for cover and returned fire, shooting Milteer. Milteer was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. During the shooting, one person inside the home was shot. That person was treated and released from the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.   

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Bartow County District Attorney’s Office for review.  

This is the 87th officer involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2023.

Cartersville Police responded to a domestic disturbance at 64 Ann Circle on Thursday night at around 9:21 that ended up becoming a shooting.

As soon as officers arrived at the residence, a male exited the front door and reportedly opened fire upon them both, striking the officers’ patrol vehicles several times but not hitting the officers. Officers returned fire, striking the male several times and one other person inside the home.

Both subjects received immediate medical aid and transportation to Piedmont Cartersville Medical Center for their injuries. Cartersville Police requested an independent investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Cartersville Police will be conducting a separate internal investigation into the incident.
