The GBI has been called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting near Circle K on Joe Frank Harris Parkway in Cartersville Thursday morning.

Reports said that officers were dispatched to the location around 6:20 Thursday morning in response to a man with a gun.

When officers arrived they allegedly saw Jose Luis Rivera, 45, in the parking lot with his hands behind his back.  Police said that after asking the suspect to show his hands he fled on foot behind the store.

During the chase, Rivera pulled a gun on the officer and fired a shot. The officer, in return, fired back at Rivera, hitting him.  He was later taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries

Witnesses reported that Rivera fired a gun into the front of the store and at customers in the parking lot before officers arrived.

The GBI has issued arrest warrants for Rivera, charging him with Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer. Once Rivera is release from the hospital he will be transported to the Bartow County Jail.
