Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John F. King announced today that Sung Park, 90, was killed in a Floyd County fire that occurred at 1:55 a.m. on Monday, October 4th. The fire moderately damaged the home on Donley Drive in Rome. 

“This unfortunate event claimed the life of Mrs. Park and severely injured her husband,” said Commissioner King. “Upon investigation, it was determined the fire originated near a power strip in the living room and was determined to be accidental in nature.”

This marks the 93rd death from a Georgia fire in 2021. Commissioner King’s Fire Investigations Unit assisted the Rome Fire Department with this investigation.

A house fire on Donley Drive in Garden Lakes Monday morning resulted in the death of 89 year-old Sung Iee Park and left her 94 year-old husband in critical condition and on life support.

According to Floyd County Coroner Gene Proctor, Park died as the result of smoke inhalation and severe burns to her body.

Reports said that Park was alive but injured when fire officials arrived on scene just before 2 am Monday.  Firefighters retrieved Park from inside the home, while her husband was able to escape outside.  He was eventually placed on life support being flown to an Atlanta hospital.  

Reports added that the fire seems to have been electrical and that nothing seems to be suspicious.
