Despite the pleas of the community the Floyd County Board of Education voted to close Cave Spring Elementary and Glenwood Primary Schools.

The schools will remain open for the remainder of this school year as well as next (2021-2022) before being realigned.

Cave Spring students will be moved to Alto Park Elementary and Glenwood students will go to Armuchee Elementary.

The only “no” vote from the board came from Danny Waits, who serves the Cave Spring district.

According to Armuchee schools board member Chip Hood, “based on the information we have, we need to do what’s best for Floyd County Schools as a whole”.

Chair Tony Daniel, from the Pepperell district, said, “I know there are a lot of people that don’t agree with what has to happen, but for long-term for Floyd County Schools, I think it’s the best thing.”

Superintendent Glenn White argued that despite the community’s assertion that Cave Spring has drawn students to the school after its STEM certification n 2015, number’s hasn’t shown an impact on school growth.

White added that there aren’t any grants that would help the situation or fix the main problem, which is too many buildings and not enough students.

The board later voted for Daniel to serve as chair for a second term and Strickland to serve as vice chair.
