Dep. Chief Lonzo Grover Roberson, age 68, of Buchanan, GA, Felton Community, passed away Friday afternoon, November 2, 2018, in a local hospital.
Chief Roberson was born in Miami, FL on May 27, 1950, son of the late Henry and Ina Carnes Roberson. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Vietnam War. Chief Roberson began his career with the Rome Police Department in 1972. He graduated from the F. B. I. Academy in 1982. In 2012, he retired as Deputy Chief, following over 40 years of service. Chief Roberson returned to the force in 2016 to serve as interim Chief following the retirement of Chief Hubert Smith. He again served in that capacity following the retirement of Chief Elaine Snow. Upon retirement, he enjoyed most his time with his grandchildren and horses. He was a communicant of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Cedartown.
Survivors include his wife, the former Be Tran, to whom he was married on April 15, 1972; 2 sons, Brad Roberson, Buchanan, and Dave Roberson (T.), Rome; 2 grandchildren, Thomas and Catherine Roberson; 2 sisters, Ruth Pike and Judy Roberson, both of Cedartown; 3 brothers, James Roberson, Rome, Leon Roberson and Lewis Roberson, both of Cedartown; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018, at 2pm in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel with Father Timothy Gallagher officiating and with the eulogy delivered by Chief Denise Downer-McKinney. Interment will follow in Polk Memory Gardens in Cedartown will full honors rendered by the American Legion Post #5 Honor Guard and the Rome Police Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, South Chapel, on Tuesday from 11am until the service hour.
The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Brad Roberson, Dave Roberson, Thomas Roberson, James Roberson, Anthony Roberson, Brandon Roberson, Keylan Roberson, Wayne Kines, and Lindsey Newborn. Honorary pallbearers will include members of the Rome Police Department and Rome Police Department Honor Guard.
