Rome Fire Department officials said that a woman, Frances Gable, sustained serious burns on Thursday after she fell asleep smoking near her bed while wearing an oxygen tank.

Reports said that Gable awakened to flames that had consumed her bed just before 5 am.

 Battalion Chief Gene Proctor said the woman was able to get out of the apartment and run to a neighbor’s for help.
Officials said that Gable suffered second and third degree burns to nearly 30 percent of her body, with most of the serious burns from her chest up.

She was later transferred to the Cobb WellStar hospital burn center in Austell.
