Three people were arrested over the weekend for allegedly depriving and imprisoning children at a home on Alfred Avenue in Rome. Richard Carl Calvert, 51, and Belinda Henegar Hicks, 55, were charged with five felony counts of cruelty to children in the second degree, two counts of felony false imprisonment and two counts of reckless conduct a misdemeanor. A third arrest, Brandie Marshell Wheeler, 28, was also charged with five felony counts of cruelty to children in the second degree.
Authorities said that Calvert and Hicks used a chain and padlock to lock up a refrigerator in the house, preventing five children from having access to food. Wheeler was also charged with the crime because she allegedly allowed the refrigerator to be locked.
Reports added that the suspects also allegedly locked up two children inside a bedroom, which resulted in the false imprisonment charge.
