A 20-year-old man was arrested after allegedly engaging in a street race at speeds topping 110 mph on Highway 27 north of Trion, according to local law enforcement. Nicholas Gilreath faces multiple charges following the high-speed incident.

The incident occurred on August 23, 2025, around 3:11 PM, when Cpl. Wilks was patrolling Highway 27  near Stoleman Road, utilizing a department-issued RADAR. Cpl. Wilks observed a gray Nissan Titan and a white passenger car traveling side-by-side southbound at an extremely high rate of speed.

Cpl. Wilks confirmed both vehicles were traveling at 110 mph in a posted 55 mph speed limit zone. Cpl. Wilks then activated emergency lights and siren, crossing the grass median to pursue the white car, which was in the fast lane. The white vehicle made a left turn onto N Ridge Estates and eventually came to a stop on an access road adjacent to the subdivision.

The driver, identified as Nicholas Gilreath, was given verbal commands to exit the vehicle and was subsequently placed into handcuffs. When questioned about the other driver, Gilreath stated he did not know him. However, Gilreath admitted he understood the dangerous nature of his actions, calling them “stupid” and expressing remorse, stating he was “sorry.”

Gilreath was placed in the patrol unit as Cpl. Villagomez arrived on scene to assist and arrange for a wrecker. A passenger in Gilreath’s vehicle, who possessed only a learner’s permit, was questioned and released without issue.

Authorities emphasized that Gilreath’s driving behavior, including racing and excessive speed, placed other motorists, pedestrians, and property in immediate danger.

Gilreath was formally arrested and charged with Reckless Driving, Speeding (110 mph in a 55 mph zone), Street Racing, and as a Super Speeder. His vehicle was retrieved from the scene by Gill’s Towing.
